How to Make a Cell Phone Lanyard – Method One

A few people have been having trouble locating cellphone lariats for my Cell Phone Charm/Zipper Pull tutorial. So here’s a quick and easy way to make some.

First off, this is what we are hoping to emulate.

This is what you will need to make this silly thing.

That’s a split ring, 1 or 2 crimp beads, a pair of pliers and your string. I’m using fake leather cording, but you could use waxed thread, etc.

Cut your string to double the length you would like it to hang (I generally use about 5-6″)
Thread your thread through the center of the split ring.

Thread both ends of the string through a crimp bead and crimp it close to the split ring.

Now just close up the loop by tying the string ends together and applying either a little melted wax or glue to seal it. OR you could thread another crimp bead on and crimp it close to the ends. Just make sure the loop is good and closed.

Then, thread your charm onto the split ring and you have a cell phone charm.

Yes, it really is that easy.

Look for an even EASIER alternate method tutorial in a week or so.

  • I hate to be picky, but it doesn’t look to me like you’ve made the item at the top. Your version leaves the open ends of the cord and the photo sneakily doesn’t show this. The charm is supposed to attach to the jump ring, the cord then threads through the mobile phone and is looped to secure it.
What I want to know is where can I get a supply of the sort of cord ends that are shown in the top picture? I can’t find them anywhere. DO they have a special name that I need to search for?
    Thanks.

  • I hate to be picky, but please READ. The first picture is of a commercially prepared cell phone lanyard, of course a home-made one won’t look exactly like that.

Now just close up the loop by tying the string ends together and applying either a little melted wax or glue to seal it. OR you could thread another crimp bead on and crimp it close to the ends. Just make sure the loop is good and closed.

Provided your cord is thin enough, it will still be able to go through the opening and perform like a commercial one. The important step is the sealing with wax or glue to allow it to slide through the loop on the cellphone.

Buying the finding isn’t worth it money-wise if that’s what you’re looking for (not to mention they’re obviously hard to find.) Lanyards are about $.05 a pop when bought in bulk.

  • man this looks so easy i love to make to crafts and such and i saw your thing on how to make a cell phone charm and i loved it i might even make my own too :)

  • Hi Kali,

May I inquire the size of crimp beads and split rings you used for this tutorial in mm?

Also, would tying the cord of the lanyard and then sealing it with melted wax/glue interfere with it’s usage such as inserting it into the cellphone hole?

    Thanks.

  • You know, I don’t remember the sizes anymore. :/ I just grabbed part of my collection at the time.

Number two would depend on the size of the cellphone hole, the size of the knot, the thickness of the thread and the amount of wax. On newer phones, you’re better off using thinner waxed thread and a flexible glue.

  • You could fold the cord in half and shown in your third picture, then put the two loose ends through a big crimp, then through the split ring, then back through the crimp (so you have 4 strings in the crimp.

Before you tighten the crimp, trim the ends so that they are hidden in the crimp, add some glue or jewelry epoxy (just as extra security) and then tighten the crimp. No tying the loose ends, and it should slip through a cell phone loop much more easily.

  • Oh, and I found the ones at the top here: http://www.lanyardsupply.com
